Users ranging from journalists and whistleblowers to drug dealers make use of Tor and the Deep Web. Most technologies can be used for both good and evil and the Deep Web is no exception. With the size, obscurity and anonymity of the Deep Web, there is a mix of good and bad lurking beneath the surface. Tor allows users to anonymously surf the Web and access sites and databases that would otherwise never be found. Instead of using popular browsers like Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari that can only skim the surface of the Web, access to the Deep Web is usually accessed using a lesser known browser called "Tor." The Tor browser (short for "The Onion Router") essentially becomes your search engine. The Deep Web is also a unique place in that it can be surfed anonymously. These bots do an incredible job of finding all content that can be accessed via hyperlinks. Hard to believe, but true.Īt a high level, Google (as well as Bing and most other search engines) indexes the Web using programs called "Web crawlers" and automated "bots" to follow links within websites and between websites to constantly gather information. The actual information that exists on the Web is impossible to know, but is estimated to be 500 times what is currently available through Google.
Google's index represents only an estimated 4 percent of the information that exists on the Internet. While this is an amazing statistic, believe it or not, 35 trillion is barely the tip of the iceberg. Google has placed in its index an estimated 35 trillion Web pages across the Internet worldwide. With more than 1 billion people performing nearly 12 billion searches each month, Google (the company) is the de facto standard for how we find information on the Web. In 2002, "Google" (the verb) was chosen as the most useful word in the English language.
